Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पौरा हि आत्म कृतात् दुह्खात् विप्रमोच्या नृप आत्मजैः ।
न तु खल्व् आत्मना योज्या दुह्खेन पुर वासिनः ॥ ॥२-४६-२३॥
Paurā hi ātma kṛtāt duhkhāt vipramocyā nṛpa ātmajaiḥ । Na tu khalv ātmanā yojyā duhkhena pura vāsinaḥ ॥ ॥2-46-23॥
Translation
Indeed, citizens should be freed by the princes from even self-inflicted sorrow; the city-dwellers should certainly not be burdened with sorrow caused by the prince himself.

राजकुमारों (राजा के पुत्रों) का कर्तव्य है कि वे नागरिकों को उनके द्वारा स्वयं ओढ़े गए दुखों से भी मुक्त करें; न कि पुरवासियों को अपने (राजकुमार के) कारण और दुख में डालें।
English Commentary
This is a profound maxim on leadership and governance (Rajdharma). Rama asserts that a ruler's duty is to alleviate the suffering of the people, even if that suffering is self-inflicted (like their stubborn decision to sleep in the wild). A prince should never be the cause of his people's pain. This philosophy dictates his decision to leave secretly—he refuses to be the reason for their continued distress in the forest.

यह श्लोक 'राजधर्म' का एक स्वर्णिम सूत्र है। राम कहते हैं कि शासक का काम प्रजा के कष्ट हरना है, भले ही वह कष्ट प्रजा ने स्वयं (मूर्खतावश या भावुकतावश) पैदा किया हो। नागरिकों का वन आना उनका 'आत्मकृत' दुख है, लेकिन राम का कर्तव्य है उन्हें इससे बचाना। राम अपने व्यक्तिगत संकट को प्रजा पर थोपना नहीं चाहते। वे मानते हैं कि राजा सेवक है, शोषक नहीं।
