Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मोहन अर्थम् तु पौराणाम् सूतम् रामः अब्रवीद् वचः ।
उदन् मुखः प्रयाहि त्वम् रथम् आस्थाय सारथे ॥ ॥२-४६-३०॥
mohana artham tu paurāṇām sūtam rāmaḥ abravīd vacaḥ |
udan mukhaḥ prayāhi tvam ratham āsthāya sārathe ॥2-46-30॥
Translation
Then, in order to confuse the citizens, Rama spoke these words to the charioteer: "O Charioteer, mount the chariot and drive towards the North."
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब नागरिकों को मोहित (भ्रमित) करने के लिए राम ने सारथी से यह वचन कहा: "हे सारथी! तुम रथ पर चढ़कर उत्तर दिशा की ओर चलो।"
English Commentary
This verse displays Rama's strategic foresight and resolve. He instructs Sumantra to drive North (towards Ayodhya) initially to create false tracks. The phrase mohana artham (for the sake of confusing/bewildering) reveals his intention: he must mislead the citizens not out of malice, but to prevent them from following him further. He realizes that total detachment is necessary to fulfill his vow, showing that his duty to Dharma supersedes his attachment to his people.

यहाँ श्रीराम की रणनीतिक कुशलता और त्याग दोनों दिखाई देते हैं। वे नागरिकों से प्रेम करते हैं, लेकिन जानते हैं कि यदि नागरिक उनके पीछे आए, तो पिता का वचन पूरा नहीं हो पाएगा। 'मोहन अर्थम्' (मोहित/भ्रमित करने के लिए) वे उत्तर दिशा (अयोध्या की ओर) जाने का आदेश देते हैं ताकि रथ के पहियों के निशान नागरिकों को यह विश्वास दिलाएं कि राम वापस शहर की ओर गए हैं या आसपास ही हैं। यह कठोर निर्णय उनके कर्तव्य पालन के लिए आवश्यक था।
