Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रामस्य वचनम् श्रुत्वा तथा चक्रे स सारथिः ।
प्रत्यागम्य च रामस्य स्यन्दनम् प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥ ॥२-४६-३२॥
rāmasya vacanam śrutvā tathā cakre sa sārathiḥ |
pratyāgamya ca rāmasya syandanam pratyavedayat ॥2-46-32॥
Translation
Hearing Rama's command, the charioteer did exactly that. Having returned, he informed Rama that the chariot was ready (for the true journey).
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम का वचन सुनकर सारथी ने वैसा ही किया। फिर (वापस) आकर राम को रथ की (तैयारी और उपस्थिति की) सूचना दी।
English Commentary
Sumantra demonstrates absolute obedience. Despite the emotional weight of deceiving the populace, he executes the maneuver precisely as instructed. He creates the decoy tracks and returns to the pickup point. This moment marks the success of the diversion; the path is now clear for them to slip away into the deeper forest without leaving a traceable trail for the waking masses.

सुमंत्र एक आदर्श सेवक हैं। यद्यपि प्रजा को धोखा देना उनके स्वभाव के विपरीत हो सकता है, किन्तु राम की आज्ञा उनके लिए सर्वोपरि है। उन्होंने रथ को उत्तर की ओर ले जाकर, निशान बनाकर, फिर चतुराई से रथ को वापस राम के पास ला खड़ा किया। यह श्लोक योजना के सफल क्रियान्वयन की पुष्टि करता है। अब वे वास्तविक वन गमन के लिए तैयार हैं।
