ततः समास्थाय रथम् महारथः ससारथिर्धाशरथिर्वनम् ययौ ।
उदङ्मुखम् तम् तु रथम् चकार स ।
प्रयाणमाङ्गश्यनिवितदर्शनात् ॥ ॥२-४६-३४॥
tataḥ samāsthāya ratham mahārathaḥ sasārathir dāśarathir vanam yayau |
udaṅmukham tam tu ratham cakāra sa |
prayāṇam āṅgaśyanivittadarśanāt ॥2-46-34॥
Translation
Then, mounting the chariot, the great warrior son of Dasharatha went towards the forest with his charioteer. He (the charioteer) had initially faced the chariot North, keeping in view the auspicious omens for departure (or to mislead).

तदनंतर, रथ पर आरूढ़ होकर, सारथी के साथ महारथी दशरथनंदन (राम) वन की ओर चले गए। (प्रस्थान के समय) सारथी ने रथ को उत्तर की ओर मुख करके चलाया, जो यात्रा के लिए शुभ/मांगलिक माना गया (या भ्रम पैदा करने के उद्देश्य से)।
English Commentary
This verse concludes the departure sequence. Rama is referred to as mahārathaḥ (great warrior), emphasizing that his nobility remains intact regardless of his setting. The mention of the "North-facing" start serves a dual purpose in the narrative: it fulfills the strategic ruse to mislead the trackers and aligns with the auspicious customs (āṅgalya) of starting a journey. The physical connection to Ayodhya is now severed.

यह सर्ग का अंतिम श्लोक है जो राम के प्रस्थान को चिह्नित करता है। 'महारथः' शब्द बताता है कि राम वनवासी वेश में भी एक महान योद्धा हैं। उत्तर दिशा की ओर मुख करने का दोहरा अर्थ है—एक तो नागरिकों को भ्रमित करना (जैसा पहले बताया गया) और दूसरा, यात्रा के शकुन शास्त्र के अनुसार उत्तर दिशा को प्रस्थान के लिए शुभ माना जा सकता है। राम अब पूर्णतः वन की ओर अग्रसर हैं।
