प्रभातायाम् तु शर्वर्याम् पौराः ते राघवो विना ।
शोक उपहत निश्चेष्टा बभूवुर् हत चेतसः ॥ ॥२-४७-१॥
prabhātāyām tu śarvaryām paurāḥ te rāghavam vinā |
śoka upahata niśceṣṭā babhūvur hata cetasaḥ ॥2-47-1॥
Translation
When the night had passed and dawn broke, those citizens, finding themselves without Raghava, were struck down by grief; they became motionless and bereft of their senses.
हिंदी अनुवाद
रात बीतने पर जब सवेरा हुआ, तो वे नागरिक राघव (राम) को अपने बीच न पाकर शोक से आहत हो निश्चेष्ट (जड़) हो गए और उनकी चेतना जैसे हर ली गई हो।
English Commentary
The narrative shifts to the citizens waking up to a nightmare. The contrast between the breaking dawn (light) and their internal state (darkness of grief) is sharp. Phrases like niśceṣṭā (motionless) and hata cetasaḥ (robbed of consciousness/wits) describe a state of shock. They are not just sad; they are paralyzed. It signifies that Rama was the animating force of their lives, and without him, they are rendered lifeless.

यह श्लोक दृश्य को पूरी तरह बदल देता है। अब फोकस राम से हटकर नागरिकों की पीड़ा पर है। 'निश्चेष्टा' (चेष्टा रहित/जड़) और 'हत चेतसः' (बुद्धि/चेतना का हनन) जैसे शब्द उस गहरे सदमे को व्यक्त करते हैं जो उन्हें लगा है। यह केवल उदासी नहीं है, यह एक सामूहिक आघात (trauma) है। जैसे प्राण शरीर को छोड़ दे, वैसे ही राम के बिना नागरिक निर्जीव से हो गए हैं।
