अद्य अयोध्या तु नगरी राज धानी पितुर् मम ।
सस्त्री पुम्सा गतान् अस्मान् शोचिष्यति न सम्शयः ॥ ॥२-४६-४॥
Adya ayodhyā tu nagarī rāja dhānī pitur mama । Sastrī pumsā gatān asmān śociṣyati na samśayaḥ ॥ ॥2-46-4॥
Translation
Today, the capital city of my father, Ayodhya, along with its men and women, will undoubtedly be grieving over our departure; of this, there is no doubt.

आज मेरे पिता की राजधानी अयोध्या नगरी के स्त्री और पुरुष हमारे चले आने के कारण निश्चय ही शोक कर रहे होंगे, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है।
English Commentary
Rama's empathy shines through here. Instead of lamenting his loss of the throne or the discomfort of the forest, his thoughts travel back to the citizens of Ayodhya. He is certain of their grief because he understands the bond they share. By acknowledging the sorrow of the "men and women," he validates their love. It highlights the quality of a true leader who, even in his own darkest hour, is preoccupied with the emotional state of his people.

राम को अपनी पीड़ा से अधिक अपनी प्रजा की पीड़ा सता रही है। वे अपने कष्टों के बारे में नहीं सोच रहे, बल्कि उस "प्रजा-वात्सल्य" का परिचय दे रहे हैं जो एक आदर्श राजा में होना चाहिए। वे जानते हैं कि अयोध्यावासी उनसे कितना प्रेम करते हैं। यहाँ 'पितुर् मम' (मेरे पिता की) कहकर वे यह भी सम्मान देते हैं कि नगर राजा दशरथ का है, परन्तु भावात्मक रूप से जनता राम से जुड़ी है। राम का यह चिंतन उनके निस्वार्थ चरित्र को उजागर करता है।
