Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शोकज अश्रु परिद्यूना वीक्षमाणाः ततः ततः ।
आलोकम् अपि रामस्य न पश्यन्ति स्म दुह्खिताः ॥ ॥२-४७-२॥
śokaja aśru paridyūnā vīkṣamāṇāḥ tataḥ tataḥ |
ālokam api rāmasya na paśyanti sma duḥkhitāḥ ॥2-47-2॥
Translation
Tormented by tears born of grief, they looked here and there, but the sorrowful citizens could not catch even a glimpse of Rama.
हिंदी अनुवाद
शोक से उत्पन्न आँसुओं से व्याकुल होकर वे यहाँ-वहाँ देखने लगे, किन्तु उन दुखियारों को राम का दर्शन (आलोक) भी प्राप्त न हुआ।
English Commentary
This verse captures the panic of the citizens. Vīkṣamāṇāḥ tataḥ tataḥ (looking here and there) visualizes their frantic, disorganized search. Their vision is blurred by tears (śokaja aśru), symbolizing how grief clouds perception. The tragedy is absolute—they cannot find even a trace or "light" (ālokam) of Rama. The success of Rama's stealthy departure is measured here by the depth of the citizens' despair.

यहाँ 'ततः ततः' (इधर-उधर) उनकी बेचैनी और हड़बड़ाहट को दर्शाता है। उनकी आँखों में आँसू हैं जिससे देखना भी मुश्किल हो रहा है, फिर भी वे राम को खोज रहे हैं। 'आलोकम् अपि' (प्रकाश/झलक भी नहीं) यह बताता है कि राम पूरी तरह से ओझल हो चुके हैं। राम की वह युक्ति सफल रही, लेकिन उसका परिणाम प्रजा के लिए अत्यंत कष्टदायक है।
