Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
निर्यातास्तेन वीरेण सह नित्यम् जितात्मना ।
विहिनास्तेन च पुनः कथम् पश्याम ताम् पुरीम् ॥ ॥२-४७-११॥
niryātāḥ tena vīreṇa saha nityam jitātmanā |
vihīnāḥ tena ca punaḥ katham paśyāma tām purīm ॥2-47-11॥
Translation
We set out with that hero who has conquered his self; now, bereft of him, how can we look at that city again?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हम उस नित्य जितेन्द्रिय वीर (राम) के साथ निकले थे, अब उनसे विहीन होकर हम उस पुरी (अयोध्या) को फिर कैसे देखें (वहाँ कैसे जाएँ)?
English Commentary
The contrast between the departure and the return is stark. They left with a hero (vīreṇa) and a master of the self (jitātmanā), feeling purposeful. Returning vihīnāḥ (bereft/without) him creates a sense of unworthiness. They feel they have no right to look upon their home city, having failed in their mission to persuade or accompany their prince. The psychological weight of the return journey is immense.

यह श्लोक उस विरोधाभास को व्यक्त करता है: प्रस्थान के समय उत्साह था क्योंकि राम साथ थे, लेकिन वापसी में केवल खालीपन है। 'जितात्मना' (जिसने आत्मा/मन को जीत लिया हो) विशेषण राम के संयम को दिखाता है, जबकि नागरिक स्वयं को असहाय पा रहे हैं। अयोध्या अब उन्हें 'घर' नहीं, बल्कि एक काटने वाली जगह लग रही है। बिना राम के अयोध्या लौटना उन्हें पराजय जैसा प्रतीत हो रहा है।
