Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततः मार्ग अनुसारेण गत्वा किम्चित् क्षणम् पुनः ।
मार्ग नाशात् विषादेन महता समभिप्लुतः ॥ ॥२-४७-१३॥
tataḥ mārga anusāreṇa gatvā kiñcit kṣaṇam punaḥ |
mārga nāśāt viṣādena mahatā samabhiplutaḥ ॥2-47-13॥
Translation
Then, following the track (of the chariot) for a short while, they were overwhelmed by great sorrow when the tracks disappeared.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनंतर वे रथ के मार्ग (लीक) का अनुसरण करते हुए कुछ पल (दूर) तक गए, परंतु फिर मार्ग (के निशान) नष्ट हो जाने से वे महान विषाद में डूब गए।
English Commentary
The narrative action resumes briefly as they try to track the chariot. However, Rama's strategy to confuse the trail works. The phrase mārga nāśāt (due to the destruction/loss of the path) marks the final severance of the physical link to Rama. The resulting sorrow is described as mahatā (great/immense), as the realization hits them that they cannot follow him even if they wanted to. The path is literally and metaphorically closed.

यहाँ राम की रणनीति (जो पिछले श्लोकों में बनाई गई थी) सफल होती है और नागरिकों की आशा टूट जाती है। वे रथ की लीक के सहारे चल रहे थे, जो उनकी एकमात्र उम्मीद थी। जैसे ही 'मार्ग नाशात्' (रास्ता/निशान खत्म हुआ), उनका अंतिम सहारा भी छिन गया। 'समभिप्लुतः' (पूरी तरह डूब गए) शब्द बताता है कि अब आशा की कोई किरण नहीं बची। यह खोज का अंत और पूर्ण हताशा का आरंभ है।
