Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रथस्य मार्ग नाशेन न्यवर्तन्त मनस्विनः ।
किम् इदम् किम् करिष्यामः दैवेन उपहताइति ॥ ॥२-४७-१४॥
rathasya mārga nāśena nyavartanta manasvinaḥ |
kim idam kim kariṣyāmaḥ daivena upahatā iti ॥2-47-14॥
Translation
With the disappearance of the chariot's track, the wise ones turned back, saying, "What is this? What shall we do? We are truly struck down by Destiny."
हिंदी अनुवाद
रथ का मार्ग लुप्त होने पर वे मनस्वी (समझदार) लोग वापस लौट पड़े, यह कहते हुए कि "यह क्या हुआ? हम क्या करें? हम तो भाग्य (दैव) के मारे हुए हैं।"
English Commentary
The limitations of human effort against destiny are highlighted here. Even the manasvinaḥ (wise/determined ones) are forced to turn back (nyavartanta). Their questions—"What is this? What shall we do?"—reveal their total confusion. Concluding that they are daivena upahatā (struck down by Fate) signifies their resignation. They realize that forces beyond their control (Destiny/Rama's will) are preventing them from proceeding, leaving them no choice but to return.
हिंदी टीका
जब पुरुषार्थ (प्रयास) विफल हो जाता है, तब मनुष्य दैव (भाग्य) को दोष देता है। 'दैवेन उपहता' (भाग्य द्वारा मारे गए/छले गए) यह स्वीकारोक्ति है कि राम का वियोग अवश्यंभावी था। 'मनस्विनः' (समझदार लोग) भी अब किंगकर्तव्यविमूढ़ (क्या करें, क्या न करें) हैं। रथ के निशानों का मिटना उनके लिए ईश्वरीय संकेत था कि अब उन्हें लौटना ही होगा। यह विवशतापूर्ण वापसी का क्षण है।
