Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आलोक्य नगरीम् ताम् च क्षयव्याकुलमानसाः ।
आवर्तयन्त तऽश्रूणि नयनैः शोकपीडितैः ॥ ॥२-४७-१६॥
ālokya nagarīm tām ca kṣayavyākulamānasāḥ |
āvartayanta te'śrūṇi nayanaiḥ śokapīḍitaiḥ ॥2-47-16॥
Translation
Gazing upon that city, their minds agitated by the ruin (of losing Rama), they poured forth tears from their grief-stricken eyes.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस नगरी (अयोध्या) को देखकर, (राम के वियोग रूपी) विनाश से व्याकुल मन वाले उन लोगों ने अपनी शोक-पीडित आँखों से आँसुओं की वर्षा कर दी।
English Commentary
The sight of Ayodhya, usually a source of pride, now triggers a fresh wave of despair. While in the forest, their focus was the pursuit; seeing the city limits forces them to confront the reality of a 'Rama-less' existence. The term kṣaya (ruin/decay) suggests they feel the city has lost its vitality. Their return is not a homecoming but a confrontation with the void left behind, causing their tears to flow uncontrollably.

जब तक वे वन में थे, तब तक एक उम्मीद थी या कम से कम वे राम के परिवेश में थे। लेकिन अयोध्या की सीमा को फिर से देखना उन्हें कठोर वास्तविकता का अहसास कराता है। 'क्षय' शब्द यहाँ केवल विनाश नहीं, बल्कि जीवन के उद्देश्य के 'ह्रास' को दर्शाता है। अपनी ही प्यारी नगरी उन्हें अब काटने को दौड़ रही है। आँखों से आँसू गिरना (आवर्तयन्त) सामान्य रोना नहीं, बल्कि आँसुओं का अनवरत प्रवाह है जो रुकने का नाम नहीं ले रहा।
