चन्द्रहीनमिवाकाशम् तोयहीनमिवार्णवम् ।
अपश्यन्निहतानन्दम् नगरम् ते विचेतसः ॥ ॥२-४७-१८॥
candrahīnam ivākāśam toyahīnam ivārṇavam |
apaśyan nihatānandam nagaram te vicetasaḥ ॥2-47-18॥
Translation
Those bewildered citizens looked upon the joyless city, which appeared like the sky without the moon or the ocean without water.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन व्याकुल चित्त (विचेतसः) लोगों ने उस आनंद-रहित नगर को ऐसे देखा जैसे चन्द्रमा के बिना आकाश हो या जल के बिना समुद्र हो।
English Commentary
The comparisons here—a moonless sky and a waterless ocean—are absolute. A sky can exist without the moon but lacks beauty; an ocean cannot exist without water. This suggests that for the citizens, Ayodhya has lost both its beauty and its very substance. The term nihatānandam (where joy has been slain/struck down) is powerful, personifying the city as a victim of a tragedy, observed by the vicetasaḥ (perplexed/senseless) returnees.
हिंदी टीका
यहाँ दो सशक्त उपमाएँ हैं—'चंद्रहीन आकाश' और 'जलहीन समुद्र'। आकाश का सौंदर्य चंद्रमा है और समुद्र का अस्तित्व जल है। इनके बिना ये दोनों निरर्थक हैं। इसी प्रकार, अयोध्या का 'जल' और 'चंद्रमा' राम थे। 'निहतानन्दम्' (जिसका आनंद मार दिया गया हो) शब्द बताता है कि नगर की खुशियाँ केवल कम नहीं हुई हैं, बल्कि उनकी हत्या कर दी गई है। यह नागरिकों की दृष्टि में शून्यता का वर्णन है।
