ते विषादार्तवदना रहितास्तेन धिमता ।
कृपणाः करुणा वाचो वदन्ति स्म मनस्विनः ॥ ॥२-४७-३॥
te viṣādārtavadanā rahitāstena dhīmatā |
kṛpaṇāḥ karuṇā vāco vadanti sma manasvinaḥ ॥2-47-3॥
Translation
Deprived of that wise Rama, those citizens—though otherwise strong-minded—became wretched, their faces stricken with despair, and they began to utter piteous words.

उस बुद्धिमान (राम) से रहित होकर, वे मनस्वी (समझदार) लोग भी विषाद से मुरझाए चेहरों वाले, दीन-हीन (कृपण) हो गए और करुण वचन बोलने लगे।
English Commentary
The impact of the separation breaks even the strongest characters. Valmiki notes that even the manasvinaḥ (high-minded/sensible people) are reduced to kṛpaṇāḥ (wretched/helpless state). It highlights the magnitude of the loss; rational thought collapses under the weight of emotional devotion to Rama. Their collective lamentation begins here, transforming the disciplined citizens of Ayodhya into a weeping crowd.

राम का वियोग इतना प्रबल है कि 'मनस्विनः' (धैर्यवान/बुद्धिमान) लोग भी अपना धैर्य खो बैठे हैं। वे 'कृपणाः' (दीन/लाचार) महसूस कर रहे हैं। सामान्यतः जो लोग संकट में दूसरों को ढाढ़स बंधाते, आज वे स्वयं विलाप कर रहे हैं। यह दर्शाता है कि राम केवल एक राजा नहीं, बल्कि उनके आत्मबल का स्रोत थे। पूरा समाज एक साथ अनाथ हो गया है।
