इहैव निधनम् यामो महाप्रस्थानमेव वा ।
रामेण रहितानाम् हि किमर्थम् जीवितम् हि नः ॥ ॥२-४७-७॥
ihaiva nidhanam yāmo mahāprasthānam eva vā |
rāmeṇa rahitānām hi kimartham jīvitam hi naḥ ॥2-47-7॥
Translation
Let us meet our death right here, or undertake the Great Departure (journey to death). Indeed, of what use is life to us without Rama?

हम यहीं मर जाएँ या महाप्रस्थान (मृत्यु की ओर यात्रा) करें। राम से रहित होकर हमारे लिए जीवन का क्या प्रयोजन है?
English Commentary
The grief escalates to suicidal desperation. The citizens contemplate mahāprasthānam—a ritualistic walk towards death used by ascetics or kings ending their lives. They question the very purpose (kimartham) of existence without Rama. This shows that Rama was not merely a political leader but the spiritual and existential core of their lives. Without him, survival feels meaningless and burdensome.

वियोग की पीड़ा अब चरम सीमा पर है। नागरिक आत्महत्या या 'महाप्रस्थान' (जीवन का अंत करने के लिए उत्तर दिशा की ओर तब तक चलना जब तक मृत्यु न आ जाए) का विचार कर रहे हैं। यह केवल भावनात्मक अतिशयोक्ति नहीं है; यह उनके जीवन के उद्देश्य के समाप्त होने का संकेत है। राम उनके लिए जीवन का आधार (प्राण) थे; उनके बिना शरीर (जीवन) का कोई अर्थ नहीं रह जाता। यह प्रेम की वह स्थिति है जहाँ प्रिय के बिना अस्तित्व ही भार लगता है।
