किम् व्ख्स्यामो महाबाहुरनसूयः प्रियम्वद ।
नीतः स राघवोऽस्माभिर्ति वक्तुम् कथम् क्षमम् ॥ ॥२-४७-९॥
kim vakṣyāmo mahābāhur anasūyaḥ priyamvadaḥ |
nītaḥ sa rāghavo'smābhir iti vaktum katham kṣamam ॥2-47-9॥
Translation
What shall we say? 'That mighty-armed, envy-free, and sweet-speaking Raghava was taken by us (and then lost)'—how can we bear to say this?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हम (अयोध्या जाकर) क्या कहेंगे? वह महाबाहु, ईर्ष्या रहित (अनसूय) और प्रिय बोलने वाला राघव हमारे द्वारा ले जाया गया (और खो दिया गया)—ऐसा कहना हम कैसे समर्थ हो सकते हैं?
English Commentary
Shame begins to mingle with grief. The citizens realize the impossibility of facing their families back in Ayodhya. They describe Rama as anasūyaḥ (free from envy/spite) and priyamvadaḥ (sweet-spoken), highlighting the gentleness of the man they failed to keep. The phrase 'taken by us' implies they feel responsible for his safety. Returning without him feels like an admission of supreme failure and negligence.

अब नागरिकों को 'लज्जा' घेर रही है। वे सोच रहे हैं कि अयोध्या वापस जाकर वे उन लोगों (स्त्रियों, वृद्धों) को क्या मुँह दिखाएंगे जो पीछे रह गए थे। राम के विशेषण 'अनसूय' (दोष न देखने वाला) और 'प्रियंवद' (मीठा बोलने वाला) उनके अपराधबोध को बढ़ाते हैं। उन्हें लगता है कि वे राम को वापस लाने की जिम्मेदारी लेकर आए थे, लेकिन अब वे असफल होकर लौटेंगे। यह "खाली हाथ" लौटने का डर मृत्यु के डर से भी बड़ा है।
