तेषामेवम् विष्ण्णानाम्पीडितानामतीव च ।
बाष्पविप्लुतनेत्राणाम् सशोकानाम् मुमूर्षया ॥ ॥२-४८-१॥
teṣām evam viṣaṇṇānām pīḍitānām atīva ca |
bāṣpaviplutanetrāṇām saśokānām mumūrṣayā ॥2-48-1॥
Translation
They were thus deeply dejected and tormented; with eyes flooded with tears, and filled with grief, they were overcome by a desire to die.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे लोग इस प्रकार अत्यंत उदास और पीड़ित थे; उनकी आँखें आँसुओं से भरी (बाष्पविप्लुत) थीं और शोक के कारण उनमें मरने की इच्छा (मुमूर्षा) जागृत हो रही थी।
English Commentary
The depth of despair reaches a suicidal pitch described by the term mumūrṣayā (with a desire to die). The physical description—eyes flooded with tears (bāṣpaviplutanetrāṇām)—is matched by the internal psychological collapse. They are not merely sad; they are experiencing an existential crisis where the cessation of life seems preferable to a life separated from Rama. It sets a dark, heavy tone for the atmosphere within the city.

अयोध्या कांड का यह नया सर्ग नागरिकों की उस मनोदशा से शुरू होता है जहाँ जीवन का मोह समाप्त हो गया है। 'मुमूर्षया' (मरने की इच्छा से) शब्द बहुत भारी है। यह केवल दुख नहीं है, यह डिप्रेशन (अवसाद) का वह स्तर है जहाँ अस्तित्व स्वयं एक बोझ बन जाता है। उनकी शारीरिक क्रियाएं तो चल रही हैं, लेकिन मानसिक रूप से वे जीवन को त्याग चुके हैं। राम के बिना जीवन उन्हें मृत्यु से भी बदतर लग रहा है।
