Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पादच् चाया सुखा भर्तुस् तादृशस्य महात्मनः ।
स हि नाथो जनस्य अस्य स गतिः स परायणम् ॥ ॥२-४८-१७॥
pādac cāyā sukhā bhartus tādṛśasya mahātmanaḥ । sa hi nātho janasya asya sa gatiḥ sa parāyaṇam ॥ ॥2-48-17॥
Translation
The shadow of the feet of such a great soul, our Lord, is happiness itself. He is indeed the protector of these people; he is the refuge and the ultimate destiny.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन जैसे महात्मा स्वामी (राम) के चरणों की छाया ही सुखदायी है। वे ही इस जन (हम सब) के नाथ हैं, वे ही हमारी गति (शरण) हैं और वे ही परम आश्रय हैं।
English Commentary
This verse is a definitive statement of Bhakti (devotion) and surrender. The citizens declare that true happiness lies not in material comforts, but in the "shadow of the feet" (padacchaya) of Rama. By calling him Natha (Lord), Gati (Refuge/Path), and Parayanam (Ultimate Goal), they elevate him from a temporal ruler to a spiritual necessity. They are willing to trade the security of the city for the hardships of the forest, provided they can remain in his shadow. It signifies that home is defined by the person, not the place.

यह श्लोक 'प्रपत्ति' या पूर्ण समर्पण का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। अयोध्यावासी राजमहल के सुखों को तुच्छ और राम के चरणों की छाया (सानिध्य) को ही वास्तविक सुख मानते हैं। यहाँ राम के लिए 'नाथ', 'गति' और 'परायणम्' जैसे भारी शब्दों का प्रयोग किया गया है, जो यह सिद्ध करता है कि प्रजा राम को केवल एक राजा नहीं, बल्कि अपना सर्वस्व मानती है। उनके लिए राम के बिना अयोध्या 'अनाथ' है, और राम के साथ वनवास 'सनाथ' (स्वामी सहित) है।
