Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
को न्व् अनेन अप्रतीतेन स उत्कण्ठित जनेन च ।
सम्प्रीयेत अमनोज्ञेन वासेन हृत चेतसा ॥ ॥२-४८-२०॥
ko nv anena apratītena sa utkaṇṭhita janena ca । samprīyeta amanojñena vāsena hṛta cetasā ॥ ॥2-48-20॥
Translation
"Who indeed would be pleased with this dwelling (in Ayodhya) which is unpleasant, filled with anxious people, and where our hearts have been stolen away (or where we dwell with minds lost in grief)?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"इस अप्रिय (निराशाजनक) और व्याकुल लोगों से भरे हुए निवास (अयोध्या) से भला किसे प्रसन्नता होगी? यहाँ रहने से तो हमारा मन (राम के साथ) हर लिया गया है।"
English Commentary
This verse serves as the rhetorical conclusion to their decision to leave. The citizens rhetorically ask who could possibly find joy in Ayodhya now. The city is described as apratitena (disappointing/unpleasant) and amanojnena (disagreeable). The phrase hrita chetasa (with stolen minds/hearts) is poignant—it implies that Rama has already taken their hearts with him; only their empty bodies remain in the city. Therefore, abandoning their homes is not a sacrifice, but a logical necessity, as their "home" is now wherever Rama is.

यह श्लोक अयोध्या के प्रति प्रजा की विरक्ति (detachment) को दर्शाता है। राम के बिना अयोध्या अब 'अयोध्या' (जिसे जीता न जा सके) नहीं रही, बल्कि एक 'अमनोज्ञ' (मन को न भाने वाला) स्थान बन गयी है। जब किसी स्थान से प्रेम का केंद्र (राम) चला जाता है, तो वह स्थान काटता है। 'हृत चेतसा' का अर्थ है कि उनका चित्त राम के साथ चला गया है; वे यहाँ केवल शरीर से हैं। अतः, बिना मन के इस उदास नगर में रहने का कोई औचित्य नहीं है। यह विरह की चरम सीमा है।
