या पुत्रम् पार्थिव इन्द्रस्य प्रवासयति निर्घृणा ।
कः ताम् प्राप्य सुखम् जीवेद् अधर्म्याम् दुष्ट चारिणीम् ॥ ॥२-४८-२४॥
yā putram pārthiva indrasya pravāsayati nirghṛṇā । kaḥ tām prāpya sukham jīved adharmyām duṣṭa cāriṇīm ॥ ॥2-48-24॥
Translation
Who can live happily after obtaining her as a ruler—that heartless woman, unrighteous and of wicked conduct, who banished the son of the King of Kings?

जिस निर्दय (निर्घृणा) स्त्री ने राजाधिराज के पुत्र को वनवास दे दिया, उस अधर्मी और दुराचारिणी को पाकर कौन सुख से जी सकेगा?
English Commentary
The citizens characterize Kaikeyi with strong adjectives: nirghrina (pitiless) and dushta-charinim (wicked-acting). They ask a rhetorical question: How can happiness exist under the shadow of wickedness? By exiling the son of the "Indra on Earth" (Dasharatha), she has disrupted the cosmic order. The verse underscores the belief that the ruler's morality directly impacts the subjects' well-being. If the root is poisoned, the fruit (the life of the citizens) cannot be sweet.

यहाँ कैकेयी के लिए 'निर्घृणा' (जिसमें दया/घृणा न हो अर्थात क्रूर) शब्द का प्रयोग हुआ है। नागरिक प्रश्न करते हैं कि सुख का आधार धर्म है; जब शासक ही 'दुष्टचारिणी' हो, तो प्रजा सुखी कैसे रह सकती है? राजा दशरथ को 'पार्थिव इन्द्र' (पृथ्वी के इन्द्र) कहकर वे राम की उच्च स्थिति और कैकेयी के अपराध की गंभीरता को दर्शा रहे हैं। यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि प्रजा राम के वनवास को केवल एक पारिवारिक कलह नहीं, बल्कि एक राष्ट्रीय आपदा मान रही है।
