Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पूर्णचन्द्राननः श्यामो गूढजत्रुररिंदमः ।
आजानुबाहुः पद्माक्षो रामो लक्ष्मनपूर्वजः ॥ ॥२-४८-२९॥
pūrṇacandrānanaḥ śyāmo gūḍhajatrurarimdamaḥ । ājānubāhuḥ padmākṣo rāmo lakṣmanapūrvajaḥ ॥ ॥2-48-29॥
Translation
His face is like the full moon; he is dark-complexioned; his collarbones are concealed (muscular); he is the subduer of enemies; his arms reach down to his knees; he has lotus-eyes—he is Rama, the elder brother of Lakshmana.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिनका मुख पूर्ण चंद्रमा के समान है, जो श्याम वर्ण के हैं, जिनकी हंसुली की हड्डी मांस में छिपी है (गूढजत्रु), जो शत्रुओं का दमन करने वाले हैं, जिनकी भुजाएँ घुटनों तक लम्बी हैं (आजानुबाहु), और जो कमल नयन हैं—वे ही लक्ष्मण के बड़े भाई राम हैं।
English Commentary
The narrative shifts from anger to nostalgic adoration. The citizens visualize Rama using classic iconographic descriptions. Ajanubahu (arms reaching the knees) is a classic mark of a hero/king in Indian physiology, denoting immense power. Gudhajatru (hidden collarbones) signifies strength and fleshiness, not emaciation. This description serves to heighten the sense of loss—they are not just losing a ruler, but a physically perfect being, a treat for the eyes (nayanabhiram).

अब प्रजा राम के रूप को याद करके विलाप कर रही है। यह श्लोक 'सामुद्रिक शास्त्र' के अनुसार महापुरुष के लक्षणों का वर्णन करता है। 'आजानुबाहु' (घुटनों तक लम्बी भुजाएँ) शौर्य और पराक्रम का प्रतीक है। 'गूढजत्रु' (छिपी हुई हंसुली) उत्तम स्वास्थ्य और सुडौल शरीर का लक्षण है। प्रजा की आँखों में राम की यह छवि बसी हुई है। वे उस सुंदरता और शक्ति का स्मरण कर रहे हैं जो अब वनों में ओझल होने वाली है।
