Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पूर्वाभिभाषी मधुरः सत्यवादी महाबलः ।
सौम्यः सर्वस्य लोकस्य चन्द्रवत्प्रियदर्शनः ॥ ॥२-४८-३०॥
pūrvābhibhāṣī madhuraḥ satyavādī mahābalaḥ । saumyaḥ sarvasya lokasya candravatpriyadarśanaḥ ॥ ॥2-48-30॥
Translation
He speaks first (initiates conversation), is sweet-spoken, truthful, mighty, gentle, and dear to the sight of all the world, like the moon.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे पहले बोलने वाले (पूर्वाभिभाषी), मधुर भाषी, सत्यवादी, महाबली, सौम्य स्वभाव वाले और समस्त लोक को चन्द्रमा के समान प्रिय दिखने वाले हैं।
English Commentary
This verse catalogs the social and moral virtues of Rama. The term Purvabhashi is technically significant; it means he initiates speech. He does not wait on ceremony or for others to bow first, breaking the hierarchy to connect with people. Coupled with Satyavadi (truthful) and Saumya (gentle), it paints a picture of a leader who is accessible and kind, despite being Mahabalah (mighty). This contrast of power and humility makes his loss unbearable for the common folk.

यह राम के गुणों का सबसे सुंदर वर्णन है। 'पूर्वाभिभाषी' राम का एक विशेष गुण है—वे किसी के बोलने की प्रतीक्षा नहीं करते, बल्कि स्वयं आगे बढ़कर 'राम-राम' या कुशलक्षेम पूछते हैं, चाहे सामने वाला छोटा ही क्यों न हो। यह उनकी निरभिमानता (humility) को दर्शाता है। 'चन्द्रवत्प्रियदर्शनः' का अर्थ है कि जैसे चंद्रमा को देखकर सबको शीतलता मिलती है, वैसे ही राम का दर्शन सबको सुख देता है। इन गुणों के कारण ही राम 'जन-नायक' हैं।
