Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नूनम् पुरुषशार्दूलो मत्तमातङ्गविक्रमः ।
शोभयुश्यत्यरण्यानि विचरन् स महारथः ॥ ॥२-४८-३१॥
nūnam puruṣaśārdūlo mattamātaṅgavikramaḥ । śobhayuśyatyaraṇyāni vicaran sa mahārathaḥ ॥ ॥2-48-31॥
Translation
Surely, that tiger among men, possessing the gait of a rutting elephant, that great warrior (Maharatha), wandering about, will beautify the forests.
हिंदी अनुवाद
निश्चय ही वे पुरुष-सिंह (पुरुषशार्दूल), जिनकी चाल मतवाले हाथी के समान (मस्त) है, वे महारथी वन में विचरते हुए वनों की शोभा बढ़ाएंगे।
English Commentary
The citizens find solace in the thought that Rama conquers his environment. He is a Purusha-shardula (Tiger among men) and walks with the confidence of a Matta-matanga (intoxicated elephant). These animal metaphors denote regality and fearlessness. The verse suggests that instead of the forest diminishing Rama, Rama will elevate the forest. His presence is an ornament that beautifies (shobhayishyati) even the wilderness. It is a reaffirmation of his inherent majesty that requires no crown.

प्रजा को विश्वास है कि राम का व्यक्तित्व इतना प्रभावशाली है कि वे जहाँ भी रहेंगे, वहाँ राजा की तरह ही रहेंगे। 'मत्तमातङ्गविक्रमः' (मतवाले हाथी जैसी चाल) शाही ठाठ-बाट और निडरता का प्रतीक है। वे कहते हैं कि अयोध्या राम के बिना श्रीहीन हो जाएगी, लेकिन भयानक वन राम को पाकर सुंदर हो जाएंगे। यहाँ राम के लिए 'महारथः' शब्द का प्रयोग यह याद दिलाने के लिए है कि वे केवल एक तपस्वी नहीं, बल्कि एक महान योद्धा भी हैं जो वन में भी सुरक्षित रहेंगे।
