Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नष्टज्वलनसम्पाता प्रशान्ताध्यायसत्कथा ।
तिमिरेणाभिलिप्तेव तदा सा नगरी बभौ ॥ ॥२-४८-३४॥
naṣṭajvalanasampātā praśāntādhyāyasatkathā । timireṇābhilipteva tadā sā nagarī babhau ॥ ॥2-48-34॥
Translation
The city then appeared as if smeared with darkness; the fires (for sacrifices/cooking) had died out, and the chanting of Vedas and sacred stories had ceased.

उस समय वह नगरी (अयोध्या) अंधकार से पुती हुई सी लग रही थी। न कहीं (यज्ञ की) अग्नि जल रही थी, और न कहीं वेदों का अध्ययन या सत्कथा हो रही थी। सब कुछ शांत था।
English Commentary
The cessation of daily rituals signifies a total breakdown of normal life. In Vedic culture, the lighting of the sacred fire and the chanting of scriptures are the heartbeat of a household. Their absence indicates that the city is in a state of sutaka (ritual impurity or mourning). The imagery of the city being "smeared with darkness" (timirena-abhilipta) suggests a thick, tangible gloom. The silence is heavy and unnatural, reflecting a collective depression where spiritual and biological appetites (eating, praying) have vanished.
हिंदी टीका
अयोध्या एक धार्मिक नगरी थी जहाँ नित्य अग्निहोत्र और वेद-पाठ होता था। परन्तु राम के वियोग में, नगर की आत्मा ही मर गई है। 'नष्टज्वलनसम्पाता' का अर्थ है कि घरों में चूल्हे तक नहीं जले, जो शोक का चरम लक्षण है। 'प्रशान्त-अध्याय' का अर्थ है कि गुरुकुलों और मंदिरों में सन्नाटा छा गया है। कवि कहते हैं कि नगरी अंधकार से 'पुती हुई' (अभिलिप्त) लग रही थी, जैसे किसी ने कालिख पोत दी हो। यह सन्नाटा शांति का नहीं, बल्कि श्मशान जैसी उदासी का है।
