उपशान्तवणिक्पण्या नष्टहर्षा निराश्रया ।
अयोध्या नगरी चासीन्नष्टतारमिवाम्बरम् ॥ ॥२-४८-३५॥
upaśāntavaṇikpaṇyā naṣṭaharṣā nirāśrayā । ayodhyā nagarī cāsīnnaṣṭatāramivāmbaram ॥ ॥2-48-35॥
Translation
The merchants had ceased their trade, joy was lost, and the city felt destitute. Ayodhya looked like the sky without stars.
हिंदी अनुवाद
व्यापारियों ने अपनी दुकानें (पण्य) बंद कर दी थीं, हर्ष समाप्त हो चुका था और नगरी निराश्रित (बेसहारा) हो गई थी। वह अयोध्या वैसी लग रही थी, जैसे तारों से रहित आकाश हो।
English Commentary
The simile "like a sky without stars" serves to highlight the loss of luster and guidance. A starless sky is ominous and disorienting; similarly, Ayodhya without Rama is devoid of its guiding lights. The economic paralysis—merchants closing shops—reinforces the idea that the vital life force of the city has been drained. The word nirashraya (without shelter/support) is poignant; even though the physical structures of the city remain, the emotional shelter provided by the rightful heir is gone, leaving the populace feeling exposed and vulnerable.

यहाँ अयोध्या की तुलना 'नष्टतारमिवाम्बरम्' (तारा-विहीन आकाश) से की गई है। जैसे तारों के बिना आकाश सूना और डरावना लगता है, वैसे ही राम (जो चन्द्रमा समान थे) और अन्य प्रमुख जनों के चले जाने से अयोध्या श्रीहीन हो गई है। 'निराश्रया' शब्द बताता है कि नागरिक स्वयं को अनाथ महसूस कर रहे हैं। आर्थिक गतिविधियाँ (वणिक्पण्या) ठप पड़ गई हैं, जो दर्शाता है कि जब राजा नहीं होता, तो समाज की गति रुक जाती है। यह एक समृद्ध राजधानी का प्रेत-नगर (ghost town) में बदल जाने जैसा दृश्य है।
