किम् नु तेषाम् गृहैः कार्यम् किम् दारैः किम् धनेन वा ।
पुत्रैः वा किम् सुखैः वा अपि ये न पश्यन्ति राघवम् ॥ ॥२-४८-७॥
kim nu teṣām gṛhaiḥ kāryam kim dāraiḥ kim dhanena vā |
putraiḥ vā kim sukhaiḥ vā api ye na paśyanti rāghavam ॥2-48-7॥
Translation
"What use do they have for homes, wives, wealth, sons, or even comforts, if they do not see Raghava?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
(वे स्त्रियाँ कहती हैं:) "उन लोगों को घरों से, पत्नियों से, धन से, पुत्रों से या सुखों से क्या प्रयोजन (क्या काम), जो राघव (राम) को नहीं देखते?"
English Commentary
The scolding takes a philosophical turn toward nihilism. The women argue that the accouterments of a successful life—home, family, wealth—are utilitarian only if Rama is the center of existence. By asking kim kāryam (what is the use?), they devalue their own roles as wives and mothers to emphasize Rama's supremacy. They imply that the men have returned to protect things (wives, homes) that have lost their value without Rama.

स्त्रियाँ यहाँ अपने पतियों के अस्तित्व पर ही प्रश्नचिन्ह लगा रही हैं। वे स्वयं को ('दारैः' - पत्नियों को) भी व्यर्थ बता रही हैं। यह निस्वार्थ प्रेम की पराकाष्ठा है—वे कह रही हैं कि "हम तुम्हारे किसी काम की नहीं, यदि तुम राम को खो आए हो।" राम के बिना गृहस्थी के चारों स्तंभ (घर, पत्नी, धन, पुत्र) निरर्थक हैं। यह प्रश्न पतियों के लिए सबसे बड़ा उलाहना है कि उन्होंने राम के बदले घर को चुना, जो कि एक घाटे का सौदा है।
