Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शृण्वन् वाचो मनुष्याणाम् ग्राम सम्वास वासिनाम् ।
राजानम् धिग् दशरथम् कामस्य वशम् आगतम् ॥ ॥२-४९-४॥
śṛṇvan vāco manuṣyāṇām grāma samvāsa vāsinām । rājānam dhig daśaratham kāmasya vaśam āgatam ॥ ॥2-49-4॥
Translation
He passed by listening to the words of the people living in the villages, who were saying: "Fie on King Dasharatha, who has fallen under the sway of lust!"
हिंदी अनुवाद
(मार्ग में) गाँवों में रहने वाले मनुष्यों की बातें सुनते हुए राम जा रहे थे, जो कह रहे थे—"काम (वासना) के वश में हुए राजा दशरथ को धिक्कार है!"
English Commentary
As Rama travels through the hinterlands, he overhears the unfiltered public opinion. The villagers, unaware that Rama might be listening, openly curse King Dasharatha. They attribute the exile to the King’s lust (kamasya vasham), reducing the complex dharmic dilemma to a base desire for Kaikeyi. It is a moment of painful irony for Rama: he is sacrificing everything to uphold his father’s honor, yet he must listen to his subjects stripping his father of that very honor. He bears this defamation silently.

राजधानी के बाद अब ग्रामीण जनता (Rural populace) की प्रतिक्रिया सामने आ रही है। गाँव के लोग सीधे और स्पष्टवक्ता हैं। वे राजा दशरथ की आलोचना कर रहे हैं। राम अपने पिता की निंदा अपने कानों से सुन रहे हैं, जो उनके लिए अत्यंत कष्टदायक है। फिर भी, वे चुपचाप सहन कर रहे हैं। 'कामस्य वशम् आगतम्'—प्रजा को लगता है कि राजा ने एक युवा पत्नी के मोह में पड़कर अपने योग्य पुत्र का त्याग किया है। यह लोक-निंदा राजा के लिए सबसे बड़ा दंड है।
