हा नृशम्स अद्य कैकेयी पापा पाप अनुबन्धिनी ।
तीक्ष्णा सम्भिन्न मर्यादा तीक्ष्णे कर्मणि वर्तते ॥ ॥२-४९-५॥
hā nṛśamsa adya kaikeyī pāpā pāpa anubandhinī । tīkṣṇā sambhinna maryādā tīkṣṇe karmaṇi vartate ॥ ॥2-49-5॥
Translation
"Oh! That cruel, sinful Kaikeyi, intent on evil, fierce and breaking all bounds of propriety, is engaged in this harsh deed today."

"हाय! वह क्रूर और पापिन कैकेयी, जिसका निश्चय ही पापमय है, आज मर्यादा को तोड़कर अत्यंत कठोर (तीक्ष्ण) कर्म में प्रवृत्त हुई है।"
English Commentary
The villagers turn their ire towards Kaikeyi, labeling her nrishamsa (cruel) and papa (sinful). They accuse her of shattering the maryada (established moral boundaries/traditions) of succession. The repetition of tikshna (sharp/harsh/fierce) emphasizes the brutality of her actions. For Rama, hearing these condemnations is a test of his equanimity. He travels through a corridor of sympathy for himself and hatred for his family members, yet he maintains his composure, witnessing the public fallout of the palace intrigue.

ग्रामीण लोग कैकेयी के प्रति भी अपना रोष व्यक्त कर रहे हैं। वे उसे 'सम्भिन्न मर्यादा' (मर्यादा तोड़ने वाली) कहते हैं। रघुकुल की मर्यादा थी कि बड़ा बेटा ही राजा बनता है, जिसे कैकेयी ने तोड़ दिया। 'तीक्ष्ण' शब्द उसके स्वभाव की उग्रता को दर्शाता है। गाँव वालों की यह बातें सुनती हुई, सीता और लक्ष्मण को भी आभास हो रहा है कि पूरा राष्ट्र उनके साथ है, लेकिन राम के लिए यह स्थिति धर्मसंकट की है क्योंकि वे अपनी 'माता' की निंदा नहीं सुनना चाहते।
