अहो दशरथो राजा निस्नेहः स्वसुत प्रियम् ।
प्रजानामनघम् रामम् परित्यक्तुमिहेच्छति ॥ ॥२-४९-८॥
Aho Daśaratho rājā niḥsnehaḥ svasutam priyam |
Prajānāmanagham rāmam parityaktumihecchati ॥2-49-8॥
Translation
"Alas! King Dasharatha is heartless; he wishes to abandon his own beloved son Rama, who is sinless and dear to the people."

"अहो! राजा दशरथ कितने निष्ठुर (स्नेहहीन) हैं, जो प्रजा के प्रिय और निष्पाप अपने ही पुत्र राम का त्याग करना चाहते हैं।"
English Commentary
This verse captures the raw, emotional outcry of the common villagers. As Rama’s chariot passes, the people, unaware of the intricate vows and Kaikeyi’s boons, see only the surface tragedy: a father banishing a virtuous son. Labeling King Dasharatha as niḥsnehaḥ (without affection/heartless) is a severe critique, highlighting that in the eyes of the subjects, this exile is not an act of Dharma but of cruelty. By calling Rama anagham (sinless), they question the justice of the situation—why is the purest among them being punished? It emphasizes Rama's universal popularity.

यह श्लोक ग्रामीण जनता की सामूहिक पीड़ा और आक्रोश को दर्शाता है। जब राम का रथ गाँवों से गुजरता है, तो साधारण जन, जो राजनीति की जटिलताओं से अनभिज्ञ हैं, केवल एक ही सत्य देखते हैं: एक पिता अपने गुणवान पुत्र को घर से निकाल रहा है। 'निस्नेहः' (स्नेहहीन) शब्द का प्रयोग दशरथ के लिए बहुत कठोर है, जो यह दिखाता है कि प्रजा राम के वनवास को न्याय या धर्म के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि क्रूरता के रूप में देख रही है। वे राम को 'अनघम्' (पापरहित) कहते हैं, यह प्रश्न उठाते हुए कि बिना किसी अपराध के दंड क्यों दिया जा रहा है।
