एता वाचो मनुष्याणाम् ग्राम सम्वास वासिनाम् ।
शृण्वन्न् अति ययौ वीरः कोसलान् कोसल ईश्वरः ॥ ॥२-४९-९॥
Etā vāco manuṣyāṇām grāma samvāsa vāsinām |
Śṛṇvann ati yayau vīraḥ kosalān kosala īśvaraḥ ॥2-49-9॥
Translation
Hearing these words of the people living in the villages, the hero and Lord of Kosala (Rama) passed beyond the limits of Kosala.
हिंदी अनुवाद
ग्राम में निवास करने वाले मनुष्यों के ये वचन सुनते हुए, कोसल के स्वामी वीर राम कोसल देश की सीमा से बाहर निकल गए।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses the title Kosala īśvaraḥ (Lord of Kosala) for Rama at the very moment he is physically leaving the kingdom. This creates a poignant paradox: he is the true ruler in the hearts of the people, yet he is leaving his realm as an exile. Rama hears the lamentations and criticisms of his father but displays immense stoicism (Vīraḥ). He does not stop to justify Dasharatha’s actions nor to console the people, as doing so might weaken his resolve or incite rebellion. He simply bears the burden of their grief and continues moving forward.

यहाँ वाल्मीकि जी ने राम को 'कोसल ईश्वरः' (कोसल के स्वामी) कहा है, ठीक उसी क्षण जब वे कोसल छोड़ रहे हैं। यह एक विडंबनापूर्ण और मार्मिक विरोधाभास है। राम अपनी निंदा या प्रशंसा सुनकर रुकते नहीं हैं; वे स्थितप्रज्ञ भाव से आगे बढ़ते हैं। ग्रामीणों का विलाप उनके कानों में पड़ रहा है, जिससे उनका हृदय अवश्य द्रवित हुआ होगा, परन्तु अपने कर्तव्य (पितृ-वचन पालन) के प्रति उनकी निष्ठा इतनी प्रबल है कि वे पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखते। यह उनकी मानसिक दृढ़ता और 'वीर' स्वभाव का परिचायक है।
