उपवासयितुं रामं मन्त्रवन्मन्त्रकोविदः ।
ब्राह्मं रथवरं युक्तमास्थाय सुदृधव्रतः ॥२-५-४॥
upavāsayituṁ rāmaṁ mantravanmantrakovidaḥ |
brāhmaṁ rathavaraṁ yuktamāsthāya sudṛdhavrataḥ ॥2-5-4॥
Translation
The knower of Mantras, and one firm in his vows (Vasiṣṭha), ascended a magnificent, yoked (ready) divine chariot, in order to make Rāma observe the fast ritualistically (with proper Mantras).

मंत्रों के जानकार, और अपने व्रत में सुदृढ़ (पक्के) उन वसिष्ठजी ने, राम को विधिपूर्वक (मंत्रों के साथ) उपवास कराने के लिए, एक श्रेष्ठ और जुते हुए (तैयार) दिव्य रथ पर आरूढ़ होकर प्रस्थान किया।
English Commentary
This verse continues the action from the previous one, highlighting the stature of the venerable Vasiṣṭha and the meticulousness of the ritual he was about to perform. Vasiṣṭha is honored here with two significant epithets: '$mantrakovidaḥ$' (knower of Mantras) and '$sudṛdhavrataḥ$' (one firm in his vows). These titles illustrate that he was not merely a ritualist but possessed deep knowledge of the Mantras and unwavering adherence to his principles. His objective was not just to make Śrī Rāma fast, but to do so '$mantravat$' (ritualistically, with the proper Mantras), which was essential for religious purification and the success of the coronation. To accomplish this, instead of walking, he ascended a '$brāhmaṁ\ rathavaraṁ$' (magnificent, divine chariot). This signifies his high status and importance within the royal family, where his arrival was also regal and dignified.
