Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अपि ते कूशलम् राष्ट्रे मित्रेषु च धनेषु च ।
यत् तु इदम् भवता किम्चित् प्रीत्या समुपकल्पितम् ।
सर्वम् तत् अनुजानामि न हि वर्ते प्रतिग्रहे ॥ ॥२-५०-४३॥
api te kūśalam rāṣṭre mitreṣu ca dhaneṣu ca । yat tu idam bhavatā kimcit prītyā samupakalpitam । sarvam tat anujānāmi na hi varte pratigrahe ॥ ॥2-50-43॥
Translation
Is all well with your kingdom, your friends, and your treasury? Whatever you have prepared here out of love, I acknowledge it all with gratitude, but I do not accept gifts (due to my vow).
हिंदी अनुवाद
क्या तुम्हारे राज्य, मित्रों और कोष में सब कुशल है? तुमने प्रेमपूर्वक जो यह सब सामग्री जुटाई है, मैं उस सबका अभिनंदन करता हूँ (उसे मानता हूँ), परंतु मैं प्रतिग्रह (दान/उपहार) स्वीकार नहीं कर सकता।
English Commentary
Rama demonstrates exquisite diplomacy and adherence to his vow (Vrata). He validates Guha’s offering by acknowledging the love behind it, ensuring Guha doesn't feel rejected. However, he firmly upholds his current status as an ascetic. An ascetic is forbidden from accepting royal luxuries or hoarding gifts (pratigraha). Rama’s refusal is not out of arrogance, but out of strict adherence to the Dharma of the forest life he has embraced. He teaches that one must stay true to one's principles even when tempted by the comfort offered by a loved one.

श्री राम यहाँ 'राजधर्म' और 'तपस्वी धर्म' के बीच संतुलन बना रहे हैं। पहले एक राजा के नाते उन्होंने गुह के राज्य की कुशलता पूछी। फिर, गुह का दिल न दुखे, इसलिए उन्होंने कहा कि वे प्रेम को स्वीकार करते हैं ('अनुजानामि'), लेकिन वनवास के नियमों के कारण भौतिक वस्तुओं का 'प्रतिग्रह' (स्वीकृत) नहीं कर सकते। यह राम की दृढ़ता को दर्शाता है। वे वन में ऐश्वर्य भोगने नहीं, बल्कि पिता के वचन का पालन करने आए हैं, इसलिए वे अत्यंत विनम्रता से राजसी सुखों को अस्वीकार कर देते हैं।
