Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अश्वानाम् खादनेन अहम् अर्थी न अन्येन केनचित् ।
एतावता अत्र भवता भविष्यामि सुपूजितः ॥ ॥२-५०-४५॥
aśvānām khādanena aham arthī na anyena kenacit । etāvatā atra bhavatā bhaviṣyāmi supūjitaḥ ॥ ॥2-50-45॥
Translation
I am in need only of fodder for the horses, and nothing else. By this much alone, I shall be well-worshipped (honored) by you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुझे केवल घोड़ों के लिए चारे की आवश्यकता है, और किसी वस्तु की नहीं। केवल इतने से ही मैं आपके द्वारा भली-भांति पूजित (सत्कृत) हो जाऊंगा।
English Commentary
This verse highlights Rama's pragmatism and empathy. While he denies himself comfort, he allows Guha to serve the horses. This serves a dual purpose: it ensures the welfare of the animals (who are not bound by vows of asceticism) and it allows Guha to fulfill his desire to serve. By saying "I will be well-worshipped by this," Rama transfers the merit of serving the horses to serving himself. It is a masterclass in gracious refusal—redirecting the host's generosity rather than rejecting it outright.

यद्यपि राम ने अपने लिए सब कुछ मना कर दिया, लेकिन उन्होंने घोड़ों के लिए भोजन स्वीकार किया। यह उनकी 'निरहंकारिता' और 'दया' को दर्शाता है। वे जानते थे कि यदि वे गुह से कुछ भी नहीं लेंगे, तो गुह को बहुत कष्ट होगा। इसलिए, उन्होंने अपने लिए नहीं, बल्कि बेजुबान पशुओं के लिए सेवा स्वीकार की। इससे गुह की सेवा भावना भी पूरी हो गई और राम का तपस्वी व्रत भी नहीं टूटा। यह दूसरों की भावनाओं का सम्मान करने की राम की अद्भुत कला है।
