ततः चीर उत्तर आसन्गः सम्ध्याम् अन्वास्य पश्चिमाम् ।
जलम् एव आददे भोज्यम् लक्ष्मणेन आहृतम् स्वयम् ॥ ॥२-५०-४८॥
tataḥ cīra uttara āsaṅgaḥ samdhyām anvāsya paścimām । jalam eva ādade bhojyam lakṣmaṇena āhṛtam svayam ॥ ॥2-50-48॥
Translation
Then, wearing the upper garment of bark, having performed the worship of the western twilight (evening Sandhya), he took only the water brought by Lakshmana himself as his food.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर, वल्कल का उत्तरीय (ऊपर का वस्त्र) ओढ़े हुए राम ने पश्चिम संध्या (सायंकालीन उपासना) की। फिर उन्होंने लक्ष्मण द्वारा स्वयं लाए हुए जल को ही भोजन के रूप में ग्रहण किया (अर्थात केवल जल पिया)।
English Commentary
This verse marks the official beginning of Rama's ascetic life. Despite the emotional turmoil and physical fatigue of leaving Ayodhya, Rama does not neglect his spiritual duties; he performs the Sandhya (evening prayers). This indicates that spiritual discipline is independent of external circumstances. His choice to consume only water (jalam eva) despite Guha’s lavish spread underscores his immense self-control. It is a poignant image: the Prince who dined on delicacies yesterday now fasts on water, served by his brother Lakshmana.

यह वनवास की पहली रात्रि है। राम ने राजसी वस्त्र त्याग कर वल्कल धारण कर लिया है। संकट और यात्रा की थकान के बावजूद, उन्होंने अपनी नित्य क्रिया 'संध्या-वंदन' नहीं छोड़ी। यह अनुशासन (नियम) की पराकाष्ठा है। 'जलम् एव आददे' (केवल जल ग्रहण किया) – यह राम के कठोर तप की शुरुआत है। जहाँ नाना प्रकार के व्यंजन उपलब्ध थे, वहाँ राम ने केवल जल पीकर रात बिताई। लक्ष्मण जी की सेवा यहाँ से शुरू होती है, जो स्वयं अपने हाथों से जल लाए हैं।
