तस्य भूमौ शयानस्य पादौ प्रक्षाल्य लक्ष्मणः ।
सभार्यस्य ततः अभ्येत्य तस्थौ वृष्कम् उपाश्रितः ॥ ॥२-५०-४९॥
tasya bhūmau śayānasya pādau prakṣālya lakṣmaṇaḥ । sabhāryasya tataḥ abhyetya tasthau vṛṣkam upāśritaḥ ॥ ॥2-50-49॥
Translation
Lakshmana washed the feet of Rama, who was sleeping on the ground with his wife, and then, moving away, stood leaning against a tree (to keep watch).
हिंदी अनुवाद
पत्नी (सीता) के साथ पृथ्वी पर सोए हुए राम के चरण धोकर, लक्ष्मण उनसे कुछ दूर हटकर एक वृक्ष का सहारा लेकर (पहरा देने के लिए) खड़े हो गए।
English Commentary
The imagery here is stark and moving. Rama and Sita, accustomed to softest bedding, are now sleeping on the bare earth (bhumau). Lakshmana performs the menial service of washing Rama's feet, showing his humility. But more significantly, Lakshmana does not sleep. He stands guard leaning against a tree. This marks the beginning of Lakshmana's famous vigil; tradition holds that he conquered sleep to protect Rama and Sita. This verse captures the essence of Lakshmana's character: service, sacrifice, and alert protection.

यह रामायण के सबसे भावुक दृश्यों में से एक है। त्रिलोकी के स्वामी राम और जनकनंदिनी सीता नंगे जमीन ('भूमौ') पर सो रहे हैं। लक्ष्मण, जो छोटे भाई हैं, उन्होंने पहले राम के चरण धोए (सेवा की), और फिर सोने के बजाय पहरा देने के लिए वृक्ष का सहारा लेकर खड़े हो गए। लक्ष्मण का यह त्याग – 'नींद और विश्राम का त्याग' – उन्हें शेषावतार सिद्ध करता है। वे राम और सीता के रक्षक बनकर, वनवास के चौदह वर्षों तक इसी तरह प्रहरी की भूमिका निभाते हैं।
