Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तम् जाग्रतम् अदम्भेन भ्रातुर् अर्थाय लक्ष्मणम् ।
गुहः सम्ताप सम्तप्तः राघवम् वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥२-५१-१॥
tam jāgratam adambhena bhrātur arthāya lakṣmaṇam । guhaḥ samtāpa samtaptaḥ rāghavam vākyam abravīt ॥ ॥2-51-1॥
Translation
Seeing Lakshmana staying awake without any pretension (solely) for the sake of his brother, Guha, pained by grief, spoke these words to the scion of Raghu.
हिंदी अनुवाद
भाई (राम) के लिए बिना किसी दंभ (दिखावे) के जागते हुए लक्ष्मण को देखकर, संताप से दुखी हुए गुह ने रघुकुल नंदन लक्ष्मण से ये वचन कहे।
English Commentary
This verse sets the stage for an intimate dialogue between Guha and Lakshmana. Guha observes Lakshmana’s vigil and notes it is adambhena—without hypocrisy or ego. It is pure, selfless service. Guha feels santapa (intense heat/grief) not just for Rama's condition, but specifically seeing Lakshmana, who is equally royal, subjecting himself to such hardship. It highlights Guha's empathetic nature; he cannot bear to see the younger brother suffering while trying to protect the older one.

यहाँ से गुह और लक्ष्मण का संवाद आरंभ होता है। गुह लक्ष्मण के त्याग को देखकर द्रवित हो उठते हैं। 'अदम्भेन' शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है—लक्ष्मण का जागरण किसी वाहवाही या दिखावे के लिए नहीं, बल्कि शुद्ध प्रेम और कर्तव्य ('भ्रातुर् अर्थाय') के लिए है। गुह का 'संताप' (दुःख) राम के लिए तो है ही, परन्तु राजकुमार लक्ष्मण को इस प्रकार कष्ट उठाते देख उनका हृदय और अधिक भर आता है। एक भक्त दूसरे भक्त के कष्ट को देखकर विचलित हो रहा है।
