अस्मिन् प्रव्रजितः राजा न चिरम् वर्तयिष्यति ।
विधवा मेदिनी नूनम् क्षिप्रम् एव भविष्यति ॥ ॥२-५१-१२॥
Asmin pravrajitaḥ rājā na ciram vartayiṣyati |
Vidhavā medinī nūnam kṣipram eva bhaviṣyati ॥2-51-12॥
Translation
Now that he (Rama) has gone into exile, the King will not survive for long; and indeed, this Earth will surely and quickly become a widow.

इन (राम) के वन चले जाने पर, राजा अब अधिक समय तक जीवित नहीं रहेंगे। और यह पृथ्वी शीघ्र ही निश्चित रूप से विधवा हो जाएगी।
English Commentary
Lakshmana’s lamentation turns prophetic and deeply metaphorical. He is convinced that the shock of Rama's exile is fatal for Dasharatha. The phrase "Earth will become a widow" (Vidhavā medinī) is significant. In Vedic culture, the King is the Bhupati (Lord/Husband of the Earth). He provides protection, fertility, and order. By saying the Earth will be widowed, Lakshmana implies not just the personal death of his father, but the collapse of Dharma and order in the kingdom. Without Dasharatha (and with Rama exiled), the land is left without a protector, stripping it of its glory and auspiciousness. It reflects Lakshmana's terrified anticipation of the chaos that will follow their departure.

लक्ष्मण का विषाद यहाँ चरम पर है। वे केवल पिता की मृत्यु की भविष्यवाणी नहीं कर रहे, बल्कि एक राजनीतिक और सामाजिक विपत्ति की ओर संकेत कर रहे हैं। भारतीय परंपरा में, राजा को पृथ्वी का 'पति' या रक्षक माना जाता है। राजा के बिना राज्य अनाथ और असुरक्षित हो जाता है। 'विधवा मेदिनी' (विधवा पृथ्वी) का रूपक अत्यंत शक्तिशाली है; यह दर्शाता है कि दशरथ की मृत्यु के बाद अयोध्या की श्री, सुरक्षा और गरिमा उसी प्रकार नष्ट हो जाएगी जैसे प्राचीन काल में पति के बिना स्त्री की स्थिति हो जाती थी। लक्ष्मण को भय है कि राम के वियोग में दशरथ प्राण त्याग देंगे और उनके बिना यह पूरी धरती (राज्य) नेतृत्वहीन और शोकग्रस्त हो जाएगी।
