कौसल्या चैव राजा च तथैव जननी मम ।
न आशम्से यदि जीवन्ति सर्वे ते शर्वरीम् इमाम् ॥ ॥२-५१-१४॥
Kausalyā caiva rājā ca tathaiva jananī mama |
Na āśamse yadi jīvanti sarve te śarvarīm imām ॥2-51-14॥
Translation
Kausalya, the King, and likewise my own mother (Sumitra)—I do not expect that all of them will survive this very night.

कौसल्या, राजा दशरथ और मेरी माता सुमित्रा—मुझे आशा नहीं है कि ये सब आज की रात भी जीवित रह पाएंगे।
English Commentary
This verse reveals the depth of Lakshmana's pessimism born of intense affection. He fears the immediate collapse of the older generation. By stating he does not expect them to survive "this night" (śarvarīm imām), he emphasizes the immediacy of the grief. He groups his own mother, Sumitra, with Kausalya and the King, recognizing that the collective shock is too great to bear. It shows Lakshmana's belief that Rama is the vital life force (Prana) of the entire family; without him, the physical bodies of the parents are merely empty shells that cannot sustain life through the dark night of separation.

लक्ष्मण का यह कथन उनके मानसिक संताप और निराशा की गहराई को दर्शाता है। वे इतने आहत हैं कि उन्हें भविष्य अंधकारमय ही दिख रहा है। वे न केवल अपने पिता के लिए, बल्कि माताओं के लिए भी चिंतित हैं। 'शर्वरीम् इमाम्' (इस रात) का उल्लेख महत्वपूर्ण है; लक्ष्मण को लगता है कि वियोग का पहला प्रहार ही इतना घातक है कि भोर होने तक शायद कोई भी जीवित न बचे। यह अतिशयोक्ति नहीं, बल्कि प्रेम से उपजा भय है। लक्ष्मण जानते हैं कि इन तीनों का जीवन राम पर आधारित है। राम के बिना, लक्ष्मण को लगता है कि उनके जीवन का आधार ही टूट गया है।
