कथम् दाशरथौ भूमौ शयाने सह सीतया ।
शक्या निद्रा मया लब्धुम् जीवितम् वा सुखानि वा ॥ ॥२-५१-९॥
katham dāśarathau bhūmau śayāne saha sītayā । śakyā nidrā mayā labdhum jīvitam vā sukhāni vā ॥ ॥2-51-9॥
Translation
"How can sleep, life, or pleasures be possible for me while the son of Dasharatha (Rama) is sleeping on the ground along with Sita?"

"दशरथ नंदन राम के सीता सहित पृथ्वी पर लेटे होने पर, मुझे नींद, जीवन या सुख कैसे प्राप्त हो सकते हैं?"
English Commentary
Here, Lakshmana reveals the torment of his soul. His refusal to sleep is not strategic; it is emotional. He asks rhetorically how he can enjoy sleep or even life itself while Rama sleeps on the bare earth. This verse epitomizes Lakshmana's philosophy: his existence derives meaning only from Rama's well-being. The contrast between Rama's royal status and his current bed of dust shatters Lakshmana's peace, making personal comfort impossible for him.

लक्ष्मण अपने हृदय की पीड़ा व्यक्त करते हैं। उनके लिए राम केवल भाई नहीं, बल्कि प्राणों के आधार हैं। जब स्वामी जमीन पर सो रहा हो, तो सेवक पलंग पर कैसे सो सकता है? यह लक्ष्मण के 'परतन्त्र' प्रेम का लक्षण है—उनका सुख राम के सुख में विलीन है। 'कथम्' (कैसे) शब्द उनकी विवशता और मानसिक वेदना को दर्शाता है। राम के कष्ट को देखकर लक्ष्मण के लिए श्वास लेना ('जीवितम्') भी भारी हो रहा है।
