इक्ष्वाकूणाम् त्वया तुल्यम् सुहृदम् न उपलक्षये ।
यथा दशरथो राजा माम् न शोचेत् तथा कुरु ॥२-५२-२२॥
ikṣvākūṇām tvayā tulyam suhṛdam na upalakṣaye |
yathā daśaratho rājā mām na śocet tathā kuru ॥2-52-22॥
Translation
I do not see a friend equal to you for the Ikshvakus. Therefore, act in such a way that King Dasharatha does not grieve for me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इक्ष्वाकु वंश के लिए तुम्हारे समान कोई दूसरा सुहृद (सच्चा मित्र) मुझे दिखाई नहीं देता। अतः तुम ऐसा उपाय करना जिससे राजा दशरथ मेरे लिए शोक न करें।
English Commentary
Rama here entrusts Sumantra with a monumental responsibility. Recognizing the inevitable chaos and grief that will engulf Ayodhya upon his departure, Rama identifies Sumantra as the quintessential 'suhrdam'—a true friend with a good heart who wishes well for the lineage without ulterior motives. Rama validates Sumantra's loyalty to the Ikshvaku dynasty. The verse highlights Rama’s supreme selflessness; he is unconcerned with the hardships awaiting him in the forest. Instead, his primary anxiety is his father’s emotional well-being. He implores Sumantra to act as a counselor and stabilizer. This request underscores Rama’s priority: fulfilling his duty as a son (Putra Dharma) by mitigating his father's suffering, even while being the cause of it.

राम यहाँ सुमन्त्र को एक बहुत बड़ी जिम्मेदारी सौंप रहे हैं। वे जानते हैं कि उनके वन जाने के बाद अयोध्या में केवल हाहाकार मचेगा। 'सुहृद्' शब्द का अर्थ है 'सुंदर हृदय वाला मित्र' जो बिना किसी स्वार्थ के हित चाहता हो। राम स्वीकार करते हैं कि सुमन्त्र से बेहतर इक्ष्वाकु कुल का कोई हितैषी नहीं है। राम की निस्वार्थता यहाँ चरम पर है; उन्हें अपनी वन यात्रा के कष्टों की चिंता नहीं है, बल्कि उन्हें अपने पिता के मानसिक स्वास्थ्य की चिंता है। वे सुमन्त्र को यह निर्देश नहीं दे रहे कि राज्य कैसे चलाना है, बल्कि यह निर्देश दे रहे हैं कि पिता को भावनात्मक रूप से कैसे संभालना है। यह पुत्र धर्म का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है।
