Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यद्यथा स महा राजो न अलीकम् अधिगच्चति ।
न च ताम्यति दुह्खेन सुमन्त्र कुरु तत् तथा ॥२-५२-२६॥
yadyathā sa mahā rājo na alīkam adhigaccati |
na ca tāmyati duhkhena sumantra kuru tat tathā ॥2-52-26॥
Translation
O Sumantra, act in such a way that the great King does not encounter unpleasantness (or falsehood) and does not suffer in grief.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सुमन्त्र! तुम वैसा ही करना जिससे महाराज को कोई अप्रिय बात (या असत्य का कलंक) न सहनी पड़े और वे दुःख से संतप्त न हों।
English Commentary
Rama reiterates his primary objective: the protection of his father. The word 'alīkam' is significant; it can mean falsehood, unpleasantness, or disgrace. Rama desires that Dasharatha neither faces the disgrace of being a liar (by failing his promise to Kaikeyi) nor collapses under the sheer weight of grief. Sumantra is tasked with a delicate balancing act. He must serve as a shock absorber for the King. Rama is effectively instructing Sumantra to use diplomacy and sensitivity upon his return to Ayodhya. The guiding principle for all of Sumantra’s actions should be the minimization of the King’s distress and the preservation of his reputation for truthfulness.

राम पुनः अपने मुख्य उद्देश्य को दोहराते हैं: पिता की रक्षा। 'अलीकम्' शब्द के कई अर्थ हैं—असत्य, अप्रिय, या धोखा। राम चाहते हैं कि दशरथ को न तो 'असत्यवादी' होने का कलंक लगे (कैकेयी को दिया वचन टूटने से) और न ही उन्हें पुत्र-वियोग का असहनीय दुःख हो। यह एक कठिन संतुलन है। सुमन्त्र को एक बफर (buffer) की तरह कार्य करना है। राम जानते हैं कि अयोध्या लौटने पर सुमन्त्र से तीखे प्रश्न पूछे जाएंगे, लेकिन राम उन्हें कूटनीति और संवेदनशीलता से काम लेने का निर्देश दे रहे हैं। राम का यह निर्देश सुमन्त्र के लिए एक 'गाइडिंग प्रिंसिपल' है कि हर कार्य की कसौटी राजा की मानसिक शांति होनी चाहिए।
