यद् अहम् न उपचारेण ब्रूयाम् स्नेहात् अविक्लवः ।
भक्तिमान् इति तत् तावद् वाक्यम् त्वम् क्षन्तुम् अर्हसि ॥२-५२-३८॥
yad aham na upacāreṇa brūyām snehāt aviklavaḥ |
bhaktimān iti tat tāvad vākyam tvam kṣantum arhasi ॥2-52-38॥
Translation
Whatever I might say without proper ceremony, unhesitatingly out of affection and devotion—you ought to forgive those words.

स्नेह और भक्ति के कारण, बिना किसी संकोच (या घबराहट) के मैं शिष्टाचार (औपचारिकता) रहित जो कुछ भी कहूँ, मेरे उन वचनों को आप क्षमा करें।
English Commentary
Sumantra asks for forgiveness in advance, aware that he is about to breach protocol ('na upacāreṇa') by protesting Ram's order to return. The term 'aviklavaḥ' here suggests speaking 'steadily' or 'without hesitation' due to the confidence born of intimacy. A charioteer does not typically argue with a prince, but Sumantra claims the license of a 'bhaktimān' (devotee). He pleads with Ram to interpret his forthcoming words not as insubordination, but as an outpouring of honest affection that bypasses the formal etiquette usually required in courtly interactions.

सुमन्त्र अपनी बात कहने से पहले क्षमा मांगते हैं क्योंकि वे जानते हैं कि वे राम की आज्ञा (लौटने की) का विरोध करने वाले हैं, जो 'शिष्टाचार' (उपचार) के विरुद्ध है। 'अविक्लवः' का अर्थ यहाँ 'विह्वल न होकर' या 'निडर होकर' है—अर्थात स्नेह के कारण वे संकोच छोड़ रहे हैं। एक सेवक राजा से तर्क नहीं करता, लेकिन सुमन्त्र 'भक्तिमान' हैं। यह श्लोक भक्त और भगवान (या सेवक और स्वामी) के बीच के उस स्तर को छूता है जहाँ प्रेम नियमों से ऊपर हो जाता है। सुमन्त्र राम से विनती करते हैं कि वे उनकी बातों को विद्रोह न मानकर प्रेम की अभिव्यक्ति मानें।
