आर्त नादो हि यः पौरैः मुक्तः तत् विप्रवासने ।
रथस्थम् माम् निशाम्य एव कुर्युः शत गुणम् ततः ॥ ॥२-५२-४४॥
ārta nādo hi yaḥ pauraiḥ muktaḥ tat vipravāsane । rathastham mām niśāmya eva kuryuḥ śata guṇam tataḥ ॥ ॥2-52-44॥
Translation
The cry of distress that was raised by the citizens at the time of your exile will increase a hundredfold upon seeing me returning alone on the chariot.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय (आपके वनगमन के समय) पुरवासियों ने जो आर्तनाद (दुःखभरी चीख-पुकार) किया था, वह मुझे अकेले रथ पर बैठा देखकर उससे सौ गुना अधिक बढ़ जाएगा।
English Commentary
In this verse, Sumantra envisions the catastrophic emotional impact his return will have on Ayodhya. When Rama first left, the citizens wailed in despair, yet there was a glimmer of hope or confusion in the chaos. However, seeing the royal chariot return empty (shunya ratha) confirms the finality of the separation. Sumantra argues that the grief of the people will multiply a hundredfold because the empty chariot is a visual symbol of their loss. This highlights Sumantra's dread; he does not want to be the bearer of such devastating confirmation. It underscores the deep bond between the citizens and Rama, where the mere sight of his vehicle without him induces mass hysteria.

इस श्लोक में सुमंत्र अपनी विवशता और अयोध्या लौटने के भयानक परिणाम का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। जब श्री राम वन के लिए निकले थे, तब प्रजा का दुःख चरम पर था, लेकिन तब भी उन्हें आशा थी कि शायद राम लौट आएं। सुमंत्र का खाली रथ लेकर लौटना उस आशा की मृत्यु के समान होगा। सुमंत्र कल्पना कर सकते हैं कि 'शून्य रथ' को देखकर प्रजा का शोक किस प्रकार अनियंत्रित हो जाएगा। यह श्लोक यह दर्शाता है कि सेवक का अपने स्वामी के बिना लौटना न केवल व्यक्तिगत लज्जा का विषय है, बल्कि यह पूरे राष्ट्र के लिए एक वज्रपात के समान होगा। सुमंत्र की यह उक्ति उनकी संवेदनशीलता और प्रजा के प्रति उनकी सहानुभूति को प्रकट करती है।
