अहम् किम् च अपि वक्ष्यामि देवीम् तव सुतः मया ।
नीतः असौ मातुल कुलम् सम्तापम् मा कृथा इति ॥ ॥२-५२-४५॥
aham kim ca api vakṣyāmi devīm tava sutaḥ mayā । nītaḥ asau mātula kulam samtāpam mā kṛthā iti ॥ ॥2-52-45॥
Translation
What shall I say to the Queen (Kausalya)? Should I say, "I have taken your son to his maternal uncle's home, so do not grieve"?

मैं महारानी (कौशल्या) से क्या कहूँगा? क्या मैं यह कहूँ कि "मैं आपके पुत्र को उनके मामा के घर छोड़ आया हूँ, अतः आप संताप न करें"?
English Commentary
Sumantra is grappling with a profound moral and emotional dilemma. He contemplates fabricating a lie to spare Queen Kausalya the immediate shock of the truth. By suggesting he could say Rama has gone to his "maternal uncle's house," he refers to a place of safety and joy, contrasting sharply with the dangers of the forest. This hypothetical lie stems from his deep compassion for the Queen; he wishes to shield a mother's heart from the brutal reality of exile. However, the phrasing suggests the absurdity of such a deception. It reveals Sumantra's desperation—he is searching for any way to soften the blow, even if it means considering an impossible falsehood.
