वन वासे क्षयम् प्राप्ते मम एष हि मनो रथः ।
यद् अनेन रथेन एव त्वाम् वहेयम् पुरीम् पुनः ॥२-५२-५६॥
vana vāse kṣayam prāpte mama eṣa hi mano rathaḥ । yad anena rathena eva tvām vaheyam purīm punaḥ ॥ ॥2-52-56॥
Translation
When the period of exile comes to an end, this indeed is my heart's desire: that I may carry you back to the city (Ayodhya) in this very chariot.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वनवास की अवधि समाप्त होने पर, मेरा यही मनोरथ (इच्छा) है कि इसी रथ से मैं आपको पुनः पुरी (अयोध्या) ले चलूँ।
English Commentary
Sumantra expresses his ultimate hope here. Although he is devastated by Rama's departure, his mind clings to the future prospect of the exile's end. The phrase 'anena rathena eva' (by this very chariot) indicates Sumantra's resolve to keep both the chariot and his duty as a charioteer ready for fourteen years. This verse symbolizes the hope of reunion right at the onset of separation. Sumantra refuses to accept that this departure implies a severing of ties; he is already looking forward to the moment he can drive Rama back to Ayodhya, fulfilling his duty to the royal house.

सुमन्त्र यहाँ अपनी अंतिम आशा व्यक्त कर रहे हैं। यद्यपि वे राम के वन जाने से अत्यंत दुखी हैं, उनका मन भविष्य की उस आशा पर टिका है जब वनवास समाप्त होगा। 'अनेन रथेन एव' (इसी रथ से) का प्रयोग यह दर्शाता है कि सुमन्त्र उस रथ को और अपने सारथी धर्म को १४ वर्षों तक सुरक्षित रखने का संकल्प ले रहे हैं। यह श्लोक विरह के आरम्भ में मिलन की आशा का प्रतीक है। सुमन्त्र यह मानने को तैयार नहीं हैं कि यह वियोग स्थायी हो सकता है; वे केवल उस क्षण की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं जब वे राम को वापस अयोध्या ले जा सकेंगे।
