Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
भृत्य वत्सल तिष्ठन्तम् भर्तृ पुत्र गते पथि ।
भक्तम् भृत्यम् स्थितम् स्थित्याम् त्वम् न माम् हातुम् अर्हसि ॥२-५२-५८॥
bhṛtya vatsala tiṣṭhantam bhartṛ putra gate pathi । bhaktam bhṛtyam sthitam sthityām tvam na mām hātum arhasi ॥ ॥2-52-58॥
Translation
O you who are affectionate to servants! I am standing on the path taken by my master's son. I am a devotee, a servant, and established in my duty. It is not proper for you to abandon me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे भृत्यों (सेवकों) पर स्नेह करने वाले राम! मैं अपने स्वामी के पुत्र के मार्ग पर ही स्थित हूँ। मैं आपका भक्त हूँ, सेवक हूँ और अपनी मर्यादा में स्थित हूँ। आप मुझे छोड़ने (त्यागने) योग्य नहीं हैं।
English Commentary
Sumantra addresses Rama as 'bhrityavatsala' (affectionate toward servants), invoking Rama's inherent nature to persuade him. Sumantra argues that he is not merely an employee but a 'bhakta' (devotee) who is 'sthityām sthitam' (established in moral conduct). He implies that it is inappropriate for an ideal master to abandon a servant who is steadfast in duty and loyalty. Here, Sumantra asserts his right—the right to serve. He is extending his loyalty from Dasharatha to Rama, operating on the principle that the path of the father and the son is identical.

सुमन्त्र यहाँ राम को 'भृत्यवत्सल' (सेवकों पर स्नेह रखने वाला) कहकर सम्बोधित करते हैं, जिससे वे राम को उनके स्वभाव की याद दिला रहे हैं। सुमन्त्र का तर्क है कि वे केवल कर्मचारी नहीं, बल्कि 'भक्त' हैं और 'स्थित्याम् स्थितम्' (मर्यादा में स्थित) हैं। जो सेवक धर्म और निष्ठा में पक्का हो, उसे त्यागना एक आदर्श स्वामी के लिए उचित नहीं है। यहाँ सुमन्त्र अपना अधिकार जता रहे हैं—सेवा का अधिकार। वे दशरथ के प्रति अपनी निष्ठा को राम के प्रति निष्ठा में परिवर्तित कर रहे हैं, यह मानते हुए कि पिता और पुत्र का मार्ग एक ही है।
