Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् बहु विधम् दीनम् याचमानम् पुनः पुनः ।
रामः भृत्य अनुकम्पी तु सुमन्त्रम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-५२-५९॥
evam bahu vidham dīnam yācamānam punaḥ punaḥ । rāmaḥ bhṛtya anukampī tu sumantram idam abravīt ॥ ॥2-52-59॥
Translation
To Sumantra, who was thus pleading pitifully again and again in many ways, Rama, who is compassionate toward his servants, spoke these words.

इस प्रकार बार-बार अनेक प्रकार से दीनतापूर्वक याचना करते हुए सुमन्त्र से, सेवकों पर दया करने वाले राम ने यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
The poet Valmiki deliberately uses the epithet 'bhṛtyānukampī' (compassionate to servants) for Rama again here. Although Rama is about to send Sumantra back, it is not out of cruelty. Rama acknowledges Sumantra's 'dīnam' (pitiable state) and his repeated pleas. Rama's response (in the following verses) is not a harsh command but a logical and consoling explanation. This verse highlights Rama's patience; even amidst the urgency and emotional stress of the exile, he pauses to respect the emotions of his aged minister and charioteer.

यहाँ राम के विशेषण 'भृत्यानुकम्पी' का पुनः प्रयोग कवि वाल्मीकि ने जानबूझकर किया है। यद्यपि राम सुमन्त्र को वापस भेज रहे हैं, किन्तु यह निष्ठुरता के कारण नहीं है। राम सुमन्त्र की 'दीनता' और बार-बार की जाने वाली प्रार्थनाओं को सुन रहे हैं। राम का उत्तर (जो अगले श्लोकों में है) कठोर आदेश नहीं, बल्कि एक तार्किक और सांत्वनापूर्ण समझाश होगी। यह श्लोक राम के धैर्य को दर्शाता है; वन गमन की हड़बड़ी और मानसिक तनाव के बीच भी वे अपने वृद्ध मंत्री और सारथी की भावनाओं का सम्मान करते हैं।
