Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नेदानीम् गुह योग्योऽयम् वसो मे सजने वने ।
अवश्यम् ह्याश्रमे वासह् कर्तव्यस्तद्गतो विधिः ॥२-५२-६६॥
nedānīm guha yogyo'yam vaso me sajane vane । avaśyam hyāśrame vāsah kartavyastadgato vidhiḥ ॥ ॥2-52-66॥
Translation
O Guha, it is not proper for me now to dwell in this forest populated with people. I must certainly live in a hermitage (as an ascetic), for that is the rule laid down for this exile.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे गुह! अब मेरे लिए इस जन-संकुल (लोगों से भरे) वन में रहना उचित नहीं है। मुझे अवश्य ही आश्रम में (तपस्वी की भाँति) वास करना चाहिए, क्योंकि यही वनवास का विधान है।
English Commentary
Guha wished for Rama to stay in his territory, where he could serve and protect him. However, Rama declines. 'Sajane vane' (populated forest) refers to an area inhabited by Guha's people with available amenities. Rama clarifies that exile implies more than just being away from home; it demands living the life of an ascetic in a hermitage. Living under Guha's protection would essentially be a continuation of royal comfort. Rama insists on strictly following the 'vidhi' (rule/ordinance) of the exile vow, showing his commitment to the spirit, not just the letter, of his promise.

गुह चाहते थे कि राम उनके राज्य में या उनके पास रहें, जहाँ वे राम की सेवा और रक्षा कर सकें। लेकिन राम इसे अस्वीकार कर देते हैं। 'सजने वने' (लोगों से भरा वन) का अर्थ है ऐसा स्थान जहाँ गुह की प्रजा और सुविधाएँ उपलब्ध हैं। राम स्पष्ट करते हैं कि वनवास का अर्थ केवल घर से दूर रहना नहीं, बल्कि 'आश्रम' धर्म और तपस्वी जीवन का पालन करना है। यदि वे गुह के संरक्षण में रहते हैं, तो वह एक प्रकार का राजसी सुख ही होगा। राम 'विधि' (नियम) का कड़ाई से पालन करना चाहते हैं।
