सोऽहम् गृहीत्वा नियमम् तपस्विजनभूषणम् ।
हितकामः पितुर्भूयः सीताया लक्ष्मणस्य च ॥२-५२-६७॥
so'ham gṛhītvā niyamam tapasvijanabhūṣaṇam । hitakāmaḥ piturbhūyaḥ sītāyā lakṣmaṇasya ca ॥ ॥2-52-67॥
Translation
Therefore, wishing for the welfare of my father, of Sita, and of Lakshmana, I shall adopt the rule (of wearing matted hair, etc.) which is the ornament of ascetics.

अतः अपने पिता, सीता और लक्ष्मण का भी हित चाहते हुए, मैं तपस्वियों के आभूषण रूपी उस नियम (जटा-जूट और वल्कल) को धारण करूँगा।
English Commentary
Here, Rama prepares to adopt the 'tapasvijanabhūṣaṇam' (ornament of ascetics). In context, this refers to the act of matting one's hair using banyan sap (described in subsequent verses). Rama states he is undertaking this penance not for himself, but for the welfare of his father (upholding truth), Sita, and Lakshmana. It implies that leading a strict ascetic life ensures spiritual protection and solidarity for his companions. Every action of Rama is 'parārtha' (for others). This marks the final ritual transformation from a Prince into a Forest Ascetic.
