Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
लक्ष्मणस्य आत्मनः चैव रामः तेन अकरोज् जटाः ।
दीर्घबाहुर्नरव्याघ्रो जटिलत्व मधारयत् ॥२-५२-६९॥
lakṣmaṇasya ātmanaḥ caiva rāmaḥ tena akaroj jaṭāḥ । dīrghabāhurnaravyāghro jaṭilatva madhārayat ॥ ॥2-52-69॥
Translation
With that (milk), Rama made matted hair for Lakshmana and then for himself. Thus, the long-armed tiger among men adopted the state of wearing matted locks.

राम ने उस (दूध) से लक्ष्मण की और फिर स्वयं अपनी जटाएँ बनायीं। इस प्रकार लम्बी भुजाओं वाले पुरुषसिंह राम ने जटाधारी रूप धारण किया।
English Commentary
This portrays Rama's fraternal love and leadership. He mats Lakshmana's hair first, then his own. It signifies that Lakshmana, too, has fully accepted the ascetic vow alongside his brother. The epithets 'naravyāghra' (tiger among men) and 'dīrghabāhu' (long-armed) are used to emphasize that adopting matted hair diminishes neither their virility nor their glory; rather, it adds a gravity to their persona. This physical transformation of the princes is a testament to the steely resolve of their vows.

यहाँ राम के भ्रातृ-प्रेम और नेतृत्व का सुंदर चित्रण है। वे पहले लक्ष्मण की जटाएँ बनाते हैं और फिर अपनी। यह दर्शाता है कि लक्ष्मण ने भी पूर्णतः वनवास धर्म स्वीकार कर लिया है। 'नरव्याघ्र' (पुरुषों में सिंह) और 'दीर्घबाहु' विशेषणों का प्रयोग यह बताने के लिए किया गया है कि जटाएँ धारण करने से उनके पौरुष या तेज में कोई कमी नहीं आई, बल्कि उनका व्यक्तित्व और अधिक गंभीर और प्रभावशाली हो गया। राजपुत्रों का यह रूपान्तरण उनके संकल्प की दृढ़ता का प्रमाण है।
