Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तौ तदा चीर वसनौ जटा मण्डल धारिणौ ।
अशोभेताम् ऋषि समौ भ्रातरौ राम रक्ष्मणौ ॥२-५२-७०॥
tau tadā cīra vasanau jaṭā maṇḍala dhāriṇau । aśobhetām ṛṣi samau bhrātarau rāma rakṣmaṇau ॥ ॥2-52-70॥
Translation
Then, clad in bark garments and wearing circles of matted hair, those two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, shone like Rishis.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब चीर (वल्कल) वस्त्र पहने और जटाओं का मण्डल धारण किए हुए वे दोनों भाई, राम और लक्ष्मण, ऋषियों के समान सुशोभित हो रहे थे।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses the word 'aśobhetām' (they shone/looked beautiful). Typically, stripping away royal attire and matting hair might make one look destitute, but Rama and Lakshmana possess an inner radiance. They appear 'ṛṣi samau' (like sages). This simile suggests that their exile is not merely a hardship but a spiritual journey. They have transitioned from the code of kings to the code of seers. Their beauty is no longer dependent on physical ornaments; it is now illuminated by their sacrifice and penance.

वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ 'अशोभेताम्' (सुशोभित हो रहे थे) शब्द का प्रयोग करते हैं। सामान्यतः राजसी वस्त्र उतरने और जटाएँ रखने से व्यक्ति श्रीहीन लग सकता है, किन्तु राम और लक्ष्मण का तेज आंतरिक है। वे 'ऋषि समौ' (ऋषियों के समान) लग रहे हैं। यह उपमा बताती है कि उनका वनवास केवल एक कष्ट नहीं, बल्कि एक आध्यात्मिक यात्रा है। उन्होंने राजधर्म से ऋषिधर्म में प्रवेश किया है। उनकी सुंदरता अब भौतिक अलंकारों की मोहताज नहीं है, वह उनके त्याग और तप से दीप्त हो रही है।
